When I was in seventh grade I got a job working as a student librarian in my hometown library. Back in those days every middle school kid had to learn the Dewey decimal system by heart, so I hit the ground running, organizing the fiction, making sure all the books on archeology were in place accordingly to epoch. Occasionally someone would wonder in and check out a book, but mostly I got to hang out in the stacks. That’s when I feel deep mad in love with books and reading.
Even today I can’t walk past a bookstore without going inside and roaming the aisles, checking to see if the classics are still on the shelves. Oh, there’s Anna Karenina, whew! Anyway, that’s how I ended up with my Fall reading list, and I can’t wait to get started. I always seem to start out reading 2 or 3 books at the same time, but in the end there emerges a favorite that I plow through. I’m especially fond of fiction, and the cashier at the bookstore raved about Anne Tyler’s “A Spool of Blue Thread.”
I can get lost thinking about authors, it’s hard to pick a favorite. I guess I’m not the only one. Check out this “Punk Authors Coaster Set”. I mean Emily Dickenson in a dog collar, who can resist?
When you think about it, shouldn’t we all be writing more and texting less? Let’s get out our pencils (crazy about these Andy Warhol Philosophy Pencils), grab a piece of paper and send our favorite sweetheart a love note. It’s what Gatsby would do after all.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY
SOMETIMES YOU READ A BOOK SO SPECIAL THAT YOU WANT TO CARRY IT AROUND WITH YOU FOR MONTHS AFTER YOU’VE FINISHED JUST TO STAY NEAR TO IT
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITES?
